Healthy Families NSV Receives $50K Grant

Winchester Medical Center, the host agency for Healthy Families Northern Shenandoah Valley (NSV), has been awarded $50,000 from the Virginia Department of Social Services as part of its Community Based Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) grant program. Healthy Families will use the funds to continue its efforts to strengthen and empower families to help them build strong foundations.

Healthy Families NSV provides education and support to parents in Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties as well as the City of Winchester. According to Jill Williams, program supervisor, the grant money will enable the agency to reach out to approximately 125 families to provide: intensive home visitation services, screenings, assessments, and community awareness and advocacy.

“Our mission is to promote child well-being to first-time parents or families who may be overburdened,” explains Williams. “The CBCAP grant will allow us to conduct extensive community education and outreach activities as well as enhance community awareness and develop educational resources.”

For nearly 16 years, Winchester Medical Center has been the host agency for Healthy Families NSV, part of the Healthy Families Virginia state system, nationally accredited by Healthy Families America through Prevent Child Abuse Virginia.

“I am so proud of our program, the outstanding work our team does with their families, the detailed management of our data system and the daily support and encouragement our program supervisors provide our team,” says Sara Schoonover Martin, executive director of Healthy Families NSV.
