Cures Act and Information Sharing

Information Blocking - Faster Release of Patient Care Information and Test Results

Beginning April 5, 2021, all patient care information including treatment notes, lab results, pathology, and test results will be available to patients in MyChart as soon as they are posted. Information Blocking is a mandate of the 21st Century Cures Act designed to provide quicker access to treatment information to patients and promote improved collaboration between patients and their care team.

Patients have access to personal health information in the MyChart patient portal right now, including lab reports or tests results. With the Cures Act, additional useful health information will be available to patients more quickly in their MyChart account including:

  • Consultation notes
  • Discharge summary notes
  • History & physician notes
  • Imaging notes
  • Laboratory reports
  • Pathology reports
  • Procedure notes
  • Progress notes

The Benefits

We believe that these changes will empower our patients in a variety of ways. New Information Blocking rules will allow patients:

  • Greater access to more types of their health information.
  • Less delay in accessing their information.
  • More options for electronic platforms that can receive this information.
  • To build stronger, more trusting relationships with their providers
  • Enhanced patient safety

In some instances, patients may receive lab and testing results before providers and clinical team members have had the opportunity to review them. Your care team will respond with a summary of clinical findings and next steps regarding your treatment plan in a timely plan, as trust and transparency remain critical components of the provider – patient relationship. For questions or concerns, patients should contact their provider to discuss.
