Winchester Medical Center Named One of Nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals

Fortune and PINC AI™ have named Valley Health Winchester Medical Center one of the nation’s top 50 cardiovascular hospitals for 2023. The annual 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study identifies hospitals that demonstrate the highest clinical and operational performance in cardiovascular services. Fortune published the recognized hospitals in an online article on March 15.

Since 1998, the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study has analyzed publicly available data, using a balanced scorecard approach, to rank top-performing cardiovascular hospitals in the United States. Hospitals do not apply to participate in the study, conducted this year by PINC AI™, the technology and services brand of Premier, Inc., a leading healthcare improvement company.

Hospitals are assigned to one of three separate peer groups and evaluated based on clinical outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and other measures. The hospitals in each peer group with the best overall ranks based on total scores were selected as the benchmark hospitals: teaching hospitals with cardiovascular residency programs (20 winning facilities), teaching hospitals without cardiovascular residency programs (20 winning facilities) and community hospitals (10 winning facilities).

WMC ranked 17th in its peer group of 335 teaching hospitals without cardiovascular residency programs. The hospital received five stars for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure, indicating performance at the top quintile (>80-100%) within its peer group, and four stars (>60-80% within the peer group) for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

“I am proud of our highly experienced team and our multidisciplinary clinical programs,” said cardiologist Jeffrey Skiles, MD, chair of the Heart & Vascular Center Oversight Committee at WMC. “Earning a spot on this year’s list of the 50 top cardiovascular hospitals is a well-deserved validation of the hard work and dedication of our clinicians, staff and leaders.”

The goal of the PINC AI™ Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals™ program is not only to identify top cardiovascular hospitals, but also to benchmark high-quality care and encourage improvement initiatives at all hospitals providing heart care. The analysis found that the winning hospitals delivered better patient outcomes while operating more efficiently and at lower cost, according to a news release from Premier.
