About
April Shewmake, DO, is a board-certified interventional cardiologist with a passion for delivering advanced, patient-centered cardiovascular care. Before becoming a Doctor of Osteopathy through Des Moines University, Dr. Shewmake completed a Juris Doctor at the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she cultivated a deep appreciation for health policy and advocacy. She completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at Virginia Commonwealth University, and residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa.
Dr. Shewmake specializes in the full spectrum of coronary and peripheral vascular interventions, including deep venous therapies and superficial vein ablations. Throughout her training and career, she has presented at national conferences, contributed to peer-reviewed research, and remained actively involved in both clinical innovation and community outreach—including women's heart health initiatives and educational media engagements.
Outside of the of medical practice, Dr. Shewmake competes in dressage, volunteering with therapeutic riding programs, playing violin, and enjoying the outdoors through cycling and cross-country skiing. Her mission is to provide compassionate, evidence-based cardiovascular care while continuing to contribute to the advancement of cardiology through research, mentorship, and public education.
