A MUGA scan (short for Multigated Acquisition Scan) is a test that shows how well your heart is pumping blood. It focuses on the left ventricle, the main chamber that sends blood to the rest of your body. Doctors often use this test to check heart function before or after certain treatments.
Upon arrival, an IV will be started and a small amount of blood will be drawn through the IV. The technologist will then tag the red blood cells with a radioactive tracer. This takes approximately ½ hour.
You will then be given your now radioactive blood back through the IV. This will not make you feel different in any way. It will enable us to watch your heart under our camera checking the function of your left ventricle and wall motion of your heart. The recording of these images last 15-30 minutes.
Patient Prep Instructions: No special prep is needed prior to this test.
