Winchester Medical Center (WMC) has once again been recognized for its unwavering commitment to patient safety, earning its 12th consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality and transparency.
This latest recognition, part of Leapfrog’s Fall 2025 Hospital Safety Grades, places WMC among an elite group of hospitals nationwide, and one of only 11 in Virginia, to maintain straight “A” grades since Spring 2020.
“Achieving twelve consecutive ‘A’ grades is a reflection of the extraordinary dedication our team brings to patient safety every single day,” said Tonya Smith, President of Winchester Medical Center and Chief Operating Officer of Valley Health. “We don’t take this recognition lightly; it’s a testament to the safety culture we’ve developed, the systems we’ve put in place to prevent patient harm, and the people who make it all possible. Our care team is committed to delivering safe, effective care for every patient who comes through our doors.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only national rating system focused exclusively on how well hospitals prevent medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Grades are assigned to nearly 3,000 general acute care hospitals across the U.S. using more than 30 evidence-based performance measures, and are updated twice a year—in the spring and fall.
The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to each hospital evaluated. Consumers can explore the latest safety grades at HospitalSafetyGrade.org, where hospitals can be sorted by state, city, or zip code:
With wide variation in safety performance across hospitals, Leapfrog’s transparent grading system empowers patients to make informed decisions about where to seek care. Winchester Medical Center’s consistent “A” rating reinforces its role as a trusted healthcare provider for the Northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
