2020 Community Benefit Report Highlights Programs and Partnerships with Community Impact

Advocating for Access. Promoting Healthy Habits. Charity Care and Financial Assistance. Fighting Mental Illness, Addiction and More. Help for the Whole Person.

These are just a few of the types of programs that Valley Health sponsors or supports beyond the walls of our hospitals and other facilities. Valley Health’s Healthier Tomorrows: 2020 Community Benefit Report, released this month, offers readers an overview of how we positively impact our friends and neighbors in the region, through collaboration with other nonprofit partners, with financial and in-kind support, and with educational outreach, screenings, camps, support groups and much more.

By the Numbers

As a nonprofit health system, Valley Health does not pay federal income taxes. In lieu of tax dollars, the organization makes significant financial contributions and investments in the region in the form of Community Benefit.

If Valley Health was a taxable organization, its potential income tax liability would have been $195+ million over the past five years (2015-2019). The Community Benefit supplied by Valley Health was $314+ million during that same period. This amounts to $119 million more invested regionally in direct support for local residents and community organizations than the potential tax liability that would have been paid to the federal government.

In 2019, Valley Health’s comprehensive community contribution exceeded $151.5 million, including care and services classified as Community Benefit, Medicare reimbursement shortfall and bad debt expense. We provided $72.8 million in Community Benefit in 2019 that the Internal Revenue Service recognizes as directly supporting our tax-exempt status.
