Teresa Clawson, MD has been practicing neonatology at Winchester Medical Center since 1996 when the NICU was a 6-bed ward style unit and has enjoyed being a part of its growth to the current 30-bed single patient room NICU. She completed medical school at Indiana University, pediatric residency at Methodist Hospital and fellowship at Indiana University Riley Children’s Hospital. Her research in residency was on blood transfusion volume and in fellowship was on growth factor expression in hypoxic brain injury. Prior to going to medical school, she was a NICU nurse and became one of the first board-certified lactation consultants.

Dr. Clawson has been active in the Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative to address quality improvement in neonatal care and is a member of two task forces that address infant mortality. She initiated the perinatal substance abuse task force to address prevention, identification, and intervention for this growing problem. She was an active participant in the initiation and development of the Parent Advisory Council and is an advocate for parent engagement in the care and recovery of their baby. She believes in a team approach to the management of patient care and is proud of the engaged NICU staff with whom she has the privilege of practicing neonatology.
