Types of Neuroimaging Tests

  • Computed Tomography (CT): A CT scan uses X-rays to create detailed images of the brain and spine.
  • CT Angiogram: This test provides images of blood vessels in the brain and neck using CT technology.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce clear images of brain and spinal structures.
  • Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA): MRA examines blood vessels in the brain and neck. It may be performed with or without contrast material.
  • Functional MRI (fMRI): fMRI identifies which areas of the brain control specific functions, such as speech. This information is especially helpful for neurosurgeons when planning surgery for tumors or other lesions.
  • Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT): SPECT is a nuclear imaging test that uses a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera to create 3D images. It helps doctors evaluate brain function and is particularly useful in identifying areas affected by seizures.
