Vascular Ultrasound

A vascular ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive test that uses sound waves to check blood flow in your veins and arteries. These studies help detect blockages, narrowing, or other issues that affect circulation. We offer several types of vascular ultrasound:

Ultrasound Services Include

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening:

This test uses ultrasound to create images of the main artery in your abdomen. You will lie on a table while a technologist scans your abdomen with a handheld probe. The exam takes about 30–45 minutes.

Prep Instructions:

  • Do not eat after midnight before your exam. You may take small sips of water for morning medications.
  • No smoking or chewing gum.
  • Bring your insurance card and medication list. Obtain a referral if your insurance requires it.
  • Be prepared to pay your copay and any balance at check-in.

Carotid Doppler:

This test uses sound waves to create images of the carotid arteries in your neck, which supply blood to your brain. You will lie on a table while images are taken. No preparation is needed. The exam lasts about one hour.

Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Test:

This test measures the thickness of the inner layers of the carotid artery to help detect early signs of vascular disease. A sonographer applies gel to your neck and uses sound waves to capture images. No preparation is needed.

Renal Artery Doppler Ultrasound:

This test checks blood flow in the arteries that supply your kidneys. You will lie on a table while images are taken. The exam takes about one hour.

Venous Insufficiency Study:

This test checks for valve problems in the veins of your legs or arms. A technologist uses an ultrasound probe to scan the affected area and may apply gentle pressure to check for blood clots. No preparation is needed. The exam takes about one hour per limb.

Peripheral Arterial Studies

PVR (Pulse Volume Recording): This test measures blood flow in your arms or legs using blood pressure cuffs. It takes about 45–60 minutes.

Prep Instructions:

  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing.

ABI (Ankle-Brachial Index): This quick screening test compares blood pressure in your ankle and arm. It takes about 15 minutes.

Prep Instructions:

  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing.

Lower Extremity Arterial Duplex (LEAD): This test evaluates the arteries that supply blood to your feet. A technologist scans your legs with an ultrasound probe. No preparation is needed. The exam takes about one hour per leg.
