Stress Test

A cardiac stress test shows how your heart works during physical activity. This helps your care team check blood flow and heart function. We offer several types of stress tests:

  • Treadmill Stress Testing
  • Nuclear Imaging Stress Test
  • Stress Echocardiogram

Treadmill Only Stress Test:

You will walk on a treadmill while we monitor your heart. Electrodes will be placed on your chest to record your heart rhythm. Blood pressure and EKG readings are taken throughout the test. The treadmill speed and incline increase until you reach your target heart rate or develop symptoms. Afterward, you will rest briefly before discharge. If an IV is used, it will be removed before you leave.

Nuclear Imaging Cardiac Stress Test:

This test begins with walking on a treadmill. As exercise intensity increases, we monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and EKG. A small amount of tracer is injected through an IV to create images of blood flow in your heart. If you cannot reach your target heart rate, medication may be used to mimic exercise. After the treadmill portion, you will sit still for 15–20 minutes while a camera takes images. These images are compared to those taken before exercise.

Nuclear Imaging Stress Test – Medication:

If you cannot walk on a treadmill, medication will be used to widen your heart’s arteries and simulate exercise. Electrodes will be placed on your chest, and we will monitor your heart rhythm and blood pressure. A tracer is injected through an IV to capture images of blood flow. This test helps identify blockages or reduced blood supply.

Stress Echocardiogram

This test combines treadmill exercise with ultrasound imaging. Pictures of your heart are taken before and after exercise to show how your heart responds to stress.
