Endovascular Therapy

Endovascular therapy uses minimally invasive techniques to treat problems in your blood vessels. These procedures are performed through a small puncture in the skin rather than open surgery. This means less pain, shorter recovery time, and fewer complications. Truly, it's changing the way heart attacks, stroke and various other medical conditions are being treated.

What conditions can be treated?

Endovascular therapy can help with:

  • Arterial aneurysms
  • Blockages of arteries supplying blood to the brain
  • Arterial blockages to the legs and arms, stomach arteries, and kidneys
  • Deep vein thrombosis and clotting disorders
  • Venous and lymphatic disorders including varicose veins
  • Advanced aortic aneurysm repair (both with surgery and with stents)
  • Peripheral arterial disease management
  • Limb preservation
  • Dialysis access
  • Kidney and stomach vascular disease management
  • Carotid disease treatment (surgical and stent)
  • Venous disease management
  • Varicose and spider veins

At Valley Health, endovascular specialists take a multidisciplinary approach, from the initial consultation to postoperative care. This therapeutic approach enables us to provide personalized treatment plans for everything from blocked blood vessels to aneurysms and more.

Common Procedures Explained

Angioplasty and Stenting

What happens: A tiny balloon is placed inside a narrowed artery and inflated to open the vessel. A stent (a small mesh tube) may be inserted to keep the artery open and improve blood flow.

Conditions treated: Blocked or narrowed arteries caused by plaque buildup, often in the legs or heart.

Benefits: Restores blood flow and reduces symptoms such as pain or fatigue.

Atherectomy

What it is: A special device removes plaque from inside an artery.
Conditions treated: Severe plaque buildup that limits blood flow, often in peripheral artery disease.
Benefit: Improves circulation and helps relieve leg pain when walking.

Thrombectomy and Thrombolysis
What it is: These treatments remove or dissolve blood clots that block blood flow.
Conditions treated: Blood clots in arteries or veins that can lead to tissue damage or stroke.
Benefit: Restores blood flow quickly and reduces risk of serious complications.

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR)
What it is: A stent graft is placed inside the affected artery to reinforce the vessel wall.
Conditions treated: Aneurysms in the abdominal aorta or other large arteries.
Benefit: Reduces the risk of rupture and life-threatening bleeding.
