Endoscopy Services at Valley Health
Comprehensive Endoscopy Care Close to Home
Valley Health provides advanced endoscopy services to help diagnose, treat, and prevent gastrointestinal conditions in Virginia and West Virginia. These procedures are also an important tool for cancer screening.
What Is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a medical procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope to look inside your body. Many scopes have a light and a tiny camera that sends images to a monitor. This allows your care team to see areas that cannot be viewed in other ways.
Endoscopy is commonly used to:
- Screen for cancer
- Diagnose and treat gastrointestinal problems
- Perform certain minimally invasive surgeries

Hospital Locations that Perform Upper Endoscopy & Lower Endoscopy
Upper Endoscopy
An upper endoscopy examines your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). The scope is gently passed through your mouth and throat.
Lower Endoscopy
A lower endoscopy looks at your large intestine (colon). This can include:
- Colonoscopy: Checks the entire colon and rectum and is often recommended for colorectal cancer screening.
- Sigmoidoscopy: Examines only the lower part of the colon and is also used for cancer screening.
Endoscopic Weight Loss and GERD Treatment
The Valley Health Metabolic and Bariatric Program offers incisionless procedures for weight loss and treatment of chronic heartburn (GERD). Options include:
- Intragastric balloon placement
- Endoscopic revision of previous bariatric surgery
Endoscopic techniques are also used by the Metabolic and Bariatric Program to manage complications such as weight regain, fistulas, and ulcers after bariatric surgery.
