U.S. News & World Report Names Winchester Medical Center Among Top 5 Hospitals in VA

Winchester Medical Center (WMC) has been named a 2025 - 26 Best Regional Hospital and was ranked No. 5 in Virginia by U.S. News & World Report. U.S. News evaluated 120 hospitals in Virginia and only 19 met the high standards required to be recognized as Best Regional Hospitals. WMC remains the highest ranked hospital in the Shenandoah Valley region.
“Being named year after year by U.S. News & World Report as the best hospital in the Shenandoah Valley region—and one of the top hospitals in Virginia—is a tremendous honor,” said Tonya Smith, Valley Health chief operating officer and president of WMC . “This consistent recognition is a testament to the dedication, compassion and excellence of our caregivers. I am incredibly proud of our care team and their continued commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care for our patients.”
WMC was recognized as “High Performing” for 16 common adult procedures and conditions, reflecting care that was significantly better than the national average for these conditions. “High Performing” is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings. WMC’s “High Performing” procedures and conditions for 2025-26 included:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
- Aortic valve surgery
- Back surgery (spinal fusion)
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Colon cancer surgery
- Diabetes
- Heart arrhythmia
- Heart attack
- Heart bypass surgery
- Heart failure
- Hip fracture
- Hip replacement
- Kidney failure
- Knee replacement
- Lung cancer surgery
- Pacemaker implantation
For the second year in a row, WMC also received a national “High Performing” rating for the medical specialty of urology, which reflects performance in the top 10% in the nation in handling complex and difficult urologic cases.
The U.S. News recognition is the latest in a series of recent achievements in 2025 reflecting high quality, safe and effective care at WMC, including earning an 11th straight “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group in May. WMC was also recognized by Newsweek as one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in May.
For the 2025-26 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals across the United States on objective measures including risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care. The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions ratings are based on objective measures of quality such as survival rates, patient experience, and how effectively hospitals help patients recover.
