Double the Compassion: Meet Our “Twin” Nurses in Medical Oncology

If you’ve ever visited the Medical Oncology Unit at Winchester Medical Center and paused to look twice, you’re not alone. Patti and Billie, two nurses who work opposite shifts, share more than a job title. They share a birthday, a striking resemblance and a deep commitment to their patients. Although not actually sisters, around the unit, they’re affectionately known as “the twins.”
A Shared Birthday and a Shared Mission
Patti and Billie met on the unit and quickly discovered they were born on the same day. “We work different shifts, so patients and families often get us mixed up,” Patti shared. “Sometimes I’ll tell a patient that although I’m leaving for the day, my ‘twin’ is coming in for the night shift and will give the same great care. Then, I let them be surprised.”
The mix-ups are part of the fun for Patti and Billie. “We’ll stand side by side and let people react,” Billie says. “Then we tell them we share a birthday and that usually gets a big reaction.”
Their similarities go beyond appearances. A recent DiSC personality assessment revealed their profiles were nearly identical, a fact no one on the team found surprising. Both nurses are known for going the extra mile to create meaningful moments, whether they’re celebrating a colleague’s certification or organizing team-building activities.
That shared heart for people led them to co-lead the unit’s Morale and Retention Committee. Years ago, both were also chosen to represent Oncology in a hospital-wide program aimed at supporting staff in high-compassion, high-stress specialties like Oncology, Critical Care, and the Emergency Department.
At the heart of it all, these “twins” bring double the dedication, double the joy, and double the compassion to their patients and colleagues every day. And in a unit where care and connection matter most, their partnership is a gift worth celebrating.
