What is happening between Valley Health and Anthem?

  • Valley Health has been working with Anthem of Virginia for several months to achieve a new contract that would ensure patients continued in-network access to Valley Health caregivers and services, while also making sure our team is able to continue confronting the COVID-19 pandemic and other health challenges.
  • Unfortunately, Anthem has been unwilling to work with Valley Health caregivers and we are preparing for the possibility that Valley Health will no longer be in-network with Anthem beginning January 1, 2021.

When would Valley Health be out-of-network with Anthem?

  • If Anthem is unwilling to work with Valley Health caregivers, we will no longer be in-network with Anthem beginning January 1, 2021.

Is my Anthem/BlueCross BlueShield Medicare supplemental health insurance plan or secondary health insurance plan impacted by these negotiations?

If Valley Health and Anthem reach a new contract agreement, would Valley Health’s rates be the highest in the state of Virginia?

  • No, Anthem claims that by more fairly compensating Valley Health, our rates will be the highest in the state. That simply isn’t true.

Are Valley Health’s prices higher than other healthcare organizations across the state?

  • No, Valley Health’s prices are in-line with other healthcare organizations across the state.

If there is a change in Valley Health’s network status with Anthem what plans will be affected?

  • All Anthem plans would be impacted (Commercial, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage).

Would a change in participation apply to all Valley Health locations and physicians?

All of Valley Health Virginia locations would be considered out-of-network. West Virginia sites of care and physicians are not impacted.

Impacted locations include:

  • All Valley Health Physician Practices in Virginia
  • Winchester Medical Center
  • Page Memorial Hospital
  • Shenandoah Memorial Hospital
  • Warren Memorial Hospital


And our joint venture partners in Virginia which include:

  • Winchester Endoscopy Services, LLC DBA Blue Ridge Endoscopy
  • Valley Health Surgery Center
  • Medical Circle, LLC DBA Valley Open MRI
  • Winchester Open MRI

What is the hospital doing to protect patients from higher costs?

  • We’re doing everything we can to protect our patients from higher out-of-pocket costs, including offering virtual visits, urgent care options and wellness programs, and a continual review of our insurance contracts to ensure the best rates for our patients.
  • Anthem raises their member’s rates each year greater than they raise the rates they pay Valley Health, not keeping pace with inflation. There should be no cost increase to patients, Anthem has already raised member’s rates and instead of passing that on to healthcare providers such as Valley Health, they have chosen instead to keep it as profit for their shareholders.

Would Anthem insured patients still be able to access care at Valley Health in 2021?

  • Yes, however all services would be processed by Anthem as out-of-network. As such, costs for care will be higher.
