Two Valley Health Hospitals Awarded "A" Grades by Leapfrog Hospital Safety Group

Valley Health’s two largest hospitals, Winchester Medical Center and Warren Memorial Hospital, have each earned another “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health system.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the first and only national health care rating focused on errors, accidents, and infections. The program has been assigning A, B, C, D and F letter grades to general acute-care hospitals in the U.S. since 2012. The Hospital Safety Grade is designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when expecting a hospital stay. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.

Grady W. (Skip) Philips, III, Valley Health System Senior Vice President and President of Winchester Medical Center, leads the hospital’s organization-wide commitment to processes and practices that create a culture of safety. “The Leapfrog “A” recognition truly belongs to our patient care team — the physicians, nurses, pharmacists, techs and others who work diligently every day to ensure the safety of our patients,” Philips said. “Patient safety is at the heart of what we do every day at Winchester Medical Center.”

Several years ago, under the direction of Nicolas Restrepo, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs, Winchester Medical Center pioneered patient safety initiatives that have since been adopted at all six Valley Health hospitals. Every morning and evening staff from each unit report any issues in a brief Safety Call to heighten awareness among frontline staff and leadership around patient safety. Safety huddles and rounding visits to the unit are other ways that concerns are raised and problems are prevented or managed efficiently.

“Our team works together quite well and it shows in the level of care we provide our patients,” said Floyd Heater, Valley Health Southern Region Vice President and President of Warren Memorial Hospital. “By making safety an ongoing priority throughout the hospital, we demonstrate our continued focus on meeting the healthcare needs of Warren County residents.”
