Valley Health System and Area Surgeons Collaborate To Open New Ambulatory Surgery Center

Valley Health System and a group of Winchester surgeons held a ceremonial groundbreaking today for the Valley Health Surgery Center (VHSC), to be built on property west of Route 37, adjacent to the Courtyard Marriott Winchester Medical Center hotel. The facility is scheduled to open in the late fall of 2017.

The state-of-the-art center is a joint venture between the not-for-profit regional health system and members of the Winchester Medical Center medical community to meet a growing demand for convenient, high quality, cost-effective outpatient surgical services for the region.

“Valley Health is pleased and honored to collaborate and partner with a committed group of physicians who share a vision to provide easily-accessible, efficient patient care,” said Mark H. Merrill, President and CEO of Valley Health and a member of the VHSC governing board. “Working together, we have created a positive model for physician-hospital collaboration, demonstrating the power of working together for shared benefit — for our patients, our community, physician partners and Valley Health.”

Neurosurgeon James B. Chadduck, MD, is chairman of the Valley Health Surgery Center governing board and has played a significant role in advancing this project. “After many months of planning, it is rewarding to be standing here today, on the cusp of making the Valley Health Surgery Center a reality,” Dr. Chadduck said. “What is now an empty landscape will soon take shape as a premier destination for high quality, specialized surgical care, where we expect not just to meet, but to exceed, patient and physician expectations.”

Nationally, outpatient surgery continues to grow as patients, physicians and insurers experience the benefits it can offer in diagnosing and treating issues of the spine, joints, feet, ears, nose and throat.

“It’s a privilege to be part of this new model of physician-hospital partnership,” said governing board member James R. Arnold, DPM, podiatric surgeon with offices in Winchester, Charles Town and Woodstock. “We are excited to be working together to build and operate a modern, welcoming, patient-centered facility dedicated to providing the best possible experience for our patients throughout the region.”

The new facility will be 21,759 square feet, with three operating rooms. The project team includes architects Noelker & Hull, Valley Engineering, and project manager Valley Health Construction Services. A general contractor has not been selected yet.
