Volunteers Bring Comfort and Joy to Patients and Families
Valley Health is more than a health system. It is a network of people who care deeply about one another. Few examples reflect this more clearly than the more than 300 volunteers who choose to give their time, attention, and steady presence across our hospitals and programs.
These volunteers represent every stage of life. They include students exploring health care careers, retirees who want to remain active and connected, parents balancing busy schedules, and lifelong residents committed to serving their neighbors. Each volunteer brings a personal reason for serving, yet all share the same belief: caring for others matters.
A Meaningful Presence Throughout Valley Health
Valley Health is strengthened every day by the dedication of more than 300 active volunteers. Their work often happens quietly, but its effect is easy to see. Volunteers ease anxiety, offer reassurance, and create moments of calm during what can be stressful days for patients and families.
“Volunteers are central to Valley Health’s mission,” said Scott Trivette, manager of Volunteer Services at Winchester Medical Center and Warren Memorial Hospital. “Their compassion allows us to extend care beyond clinical spaces. Whether they are greeting patients, helping visitors find their way, or providing courtesy shuttle rides, every hour they give helps us better serve our community. We could not fulfill our mission without them.”
How Volunteers Serve
Across Valley Health, volunteers support patients, families, and staff in many ways, including:
- Courtesy shuttle drivers who provide safe and friendly transportation for patients and visitors
- Gift shop associates who assist customers and support hospital programs through sales
- Wayfinders who escort patients to appointments and help reduce stress and confusion
- Clerical support volunteers who assist departments so staff can focus on patient care
- Special event volunteers who help make community health fairs and outreach programs possible
While these roles are important, the true value of volunteer service often appears in simple, personal moments.
