Building a Healthier Future Through Sustainability
At Valley Health, we know that health is shaped not only inside hospital walls, but also by the world around us. Clean air, safe water, reliable energy and healthy green spaces all play a vital role in the well-being of the people we serve. Environmental factors are deeply connected to physical and mental health, and as a health care organization committed to improving lives across our region, we believe we have a responsibility to help protect the environment our patients, families and caregivers call home.
That’s why sustainability is more than a line item for us; it’s a long-term commitment to reducing our footprint, protecting natural resources and helping create a healthier future for our region. We strive not only to provide the best care within our facilities, but also to help create the best environment around them.
Our efforts span energy, land stewardship, waste reduction and innovation, with each step helping build a greener, more resilient community:
- More than 2,500 rooftop solar panels added in 2024, increasing our solar capacity to 3.2 MW across 7,100 panels, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and lowering our carbon footprint.
- New and expanded EV charging stations across multiple locations, supporting more sustainable transportation for caregivers, patients, and visitors.
- Electric courtesy vehicles and shuttle services incorporated into campus operations, reducing emissions while supporting convenient, lower-impact transportation for patients and visitors.
- Designated green space and no-mow zones established on select campuses to support native habitats, improve biodiversity and reduce fuel use and landscape maintenance emissions.
- 248 tons of mixed waste recycled in 2024, including 218 tons of cardboard, keeping valuable materials out of landfills and promoting a culture of responsibility across our campuses.
Beyond these efforts, Valley Health continues to explore new opportunities to reduce emissions, conserve resources, improve landscaping sustainability and promote environmentally conscious construction. Our goal is simple: to be good stewards of the environment today so the patients we serve, and the generations who will depend on us tomorrow, inherit a healthier, more sustainable region.
Because when we care for the environment, we care for the community, and caring for the community is at the heart of everything we do. This World Environment Day, we’re proud to continue building a healthier, more sustainable future for the region we call home.
