Medication Safety in Your Home

Every year thousands of children are hospitalized, and some even die, from taking medications not meant for them. In addition, teens and young adults are stealing prescription drugs out of their parents or grandparents medicine cabinets. Parents, family members, caregivers can play a critical role in safeguarding children through good communication, paying attention, and observing changes in behavior. Talk to your kids about the risks of prescription drug abuse because children who are aware of the risks are up to 50 percent less likely to use them. You can help prevent prescription drug abuse by following these steps.

Use as Prescribed
Take your medications as prescribed and set an example for your kids by not sharing medications or taking a drug without having a prescription for it.

Lock Up Your Meds
The best way to ensure that medications you are currently taking don’t end up in someone else’s hands is to lock them up. Below are locations in our area where you can purchase affordable medication lock boxes. If you don’t have a lock box available consider securing your medications in a filing cabinet or safe.
