Healthier Tomorrows: Community Benefit

As defined by the IRS, Community Benefit includes programs or activities that improve access to healthcare services and community health, advance medical or health knowledge, or relieve or reduce government or community burden. These programs should be in response to a community-identified need with a particular focus on assisting the underserved. Community benefit includes charity care and the unreimbursed cost of health services for individuals with Medicaid, along with community health improvement programs, health professions education, and subsidized health services and research.

In 2022, Valley Health’s community contribution was more than $209 million in the form of Community Benefit programs, unreimbursed costs for care provided to Medicare and Medicaid recipients, uncollected fees for healthcare services provided, and more. In addition to supporting healthcare for those who cannot afford it, we reinvest excess revenue back into the community to improve the health of those we serve.
