Automated Breast Ultrasound Screening (ABUS)
Breast screenings are an important part of women’s health. During
yearly mammogram screenings, some women will learn that they have dense
breast tissue. Mammography alone is less sensitive in those with dense
tissue and some women benefit from an
Automated Breast Ultrasound Screening (ABUS) in addition to their yearly mammogram.
- Women with extremely dense breasts are 4-6 times more likely to develop
breast cancer than women with normal breast tissue
- It is estimated that mammograms alone miss one-third of breast cancers
hidden in women with dense breasts
ABUS improves detection of breast cancer, over mammography alone, by providing
a comfortable scan that takes a few minutes to complete
About the Exam
Available at Winchester Medical Center, our Automated Breast Ultrasound
technology is designed to provide a comfortable and private exam experience.
During an ABUS exam, patients are able to remain covered, and the exam
takes just a few minutes with no outside compression on the breast; however,
during this short time, hundreds of images are generated to supplement
those taken during your mammogram. When reviewed together, each screening
provides valuable information for physicians to analyze your breast health
and detect abnormalities, even with dense breast tissue.
Depending on your insurance plan and deductible, ABUS screening may be
covered by insurance plans. For patients choosing to pay out of pocket
for the exam, or whose insurance does not cover the cost, the exam fee
is $250, due at the time of service. Interest-free financing is available.
A physician referral is required, so talk to your doctor about the benefits
of Automated Breast Ultrasound. ABUS is available at the Outpatient Diagnostic Center located on the campus
of Winchester Medical Center. To make an appointment, please call 855-724-3384.
