There’s a change coming for Medicare beneficiaries.
CMS is changing the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) number for ALL
Medicare patients and began mailing new cards on April 1. These new cards with new numbers will improve healthcare data security
for all Valley Health Medicare patients, so check your mailbox and keep
your eyes open for your new card.
Here are important points to know:
- The purpose of this change is to protect Medicare beneficiary privacy by
removing Social Security Numbers (SSN) from the Medicare Card.
- The new Medicare Number will be the same length but include a randomized
alpha-numeric combination instead of the traditional SSN.
Mailing order was intentionally randomized by CMS; mailing is not done
by region, state, ZIP, or any other order.
Your spouse or neighbor may get his/her card months before you or vis-a-versa.
- Once you receive your new card, begin using it right away…and immediately
destroy your old card! Take your new card with you to all upcoming medical
appointments and use it.
Medicare will accept either the old or new card and number until December
Effective January 1, 2020, only the new number will be accepted on claims.
