U.S. News Hospital Rating: Winchester Medical Center #5 in Virginia

WMC recognized as high-performing in 9 specialty areas

U.S. News & World Report released its Best Hospital Rankings for 2014-15 today and Winchester Medical Center was recognized as one of the top five hospitals in Virginia. 

The report, which is available at health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/area/va, looks at hospital performance in 16 specialties. For tertiary community hospitals like Winchester Medical Center, the analysts at U.S. News evaluate hospital performance in 12 specialties.  Data comes from multiple sources and are applied across four primary dimensions of healthcare: outcomes, structure, process, and patient safety.  For the second year in a row, WMC was highly rated in nine of these specialties. 

U.S. News rated WMC as “high-performing” in the following nine specialties: 

  1. Cardiology & Heart Surgery
  2. Diabetes & Endocrinology
  3. Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
  4. Geriatrics
  5. Nephrology
  6. Neurology & Neurosurgery
  7. Orthopedics
  8. Pulmonology
  9. Urology

The 2014-15 Best Hospitals rankings are drawn from a universe of nearly 5,000 hospitals. Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance, according to U.S. News & World Report.

WMC took the fifth spot in Virginia with nine high-performing areas:

  5. Winchester Medical Center
  6. Mary Washington Hospital
  7. University of Virginia Medical Center
  8. Centra Lynchburg General Hospital
  9. Inova Alexandria Hospital
  10. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital
