Friday, June 29, 2012 - Winchester Medical Center Welcomes New Surgical Director of Heart & Vascular Program
Cardiothoracic surgeon Edward R. Kofsky, MD has joined the medical staff at Winchester Medical Center (WMC) and has been named facility’s Medical Director of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.
Dr. Kofsky has spent more than twenty years as a practicing surgeon, teacher, and administrator. He graduated Summa cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in Biology. He remained at Penn for his medical education, earning his MD degree and honors for his academic performance and surgery skills in 1984. Dr. Kofsky completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, a two-year surgical research fellowship in cardiac metabolism at UCLA Medical Center, and fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York. He was a cardiothoracic surgeon at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, NY, for 12 years, the last three also directing its minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery program. Dr. Kofsky is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgeons, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
“I am delighted to be here. It is a privilege to join a staff of professionals dedicated to exceptional patient care,” said Dr. Kofsky. “The decision to come to Winchester Medical Center was an easy one, in that the institution has demonstrated a keen interest in bringing a comprehensive, team approach to the care of patients with heart, lung and vascular disease. It is this multidisciplinary, patient-focused orientation that, in my opinion, results in the best clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction and has distinguished the hospital as the preferred destination for patients and providers.”
As director, Dr. Kofsky plans to build on past successes and advance the capabilities of the cardiothoracic and vascular service line. “In partnership with a talented surgical team and an outstanding cardiology staff, it is my objective to further the reputation of the Heart and Vascular Center as a first-class organization and as a continuing source of pride for the entire community,” he said.
Kenneth Saum, MD also joined the WMC medical staff earlier this year as the Medical Director of Thoracic Surgery. A graduate of the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, he completed an internship and residency in general surgery at University of Maryland Medical Center. He also completed an internship in cardiothoracic surgery and a fellowship in thoracic surgery at University of Maryland.
Dr. Saum has been in practice for 13 years and has a strong cardiothoracic surgery background as well as specialized training in thoracic surgical oncology. Before coming to Winchester Medical Center, Dr. Saum practiced at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, in Carbondale, Illinois, where he was Director of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. He also served as Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Southern Illinois University and helped establish the thoracic oncology program there.
Dr. Saum’s clinical interests include all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery with specialization in thoracic oncology, chest trauma, early detection and treatment of lung cancer, coronary artery revascularization and mitral valve repair and replacement. He is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Saum, originally from Hagerstown, MD, is a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps, Dr. Saum was deployed four times to Afghanistan and Iraq, with a combined length of service of nearly two years.
“Winchester Medical Center has a great tradition of providing outstanding heart care. The new Heart & Vascular Center is an expression of that success, and Dr. Kofsky and Dr. Saum are outstanding additions to our surgical team and our medical community,” said Al Pilong, President of Winchester Medical Center.
“Our goal is to work with the medical community, the nursing staff and patients in ways that reinforce the tradition of excellence this facility is noted for,” says Kofsky.
Dr. Kofsky and Dr. Saum have joined Valley Health Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons, located at 190 Campus Boulevard, Suite 410 on the WMC campus. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call 540-536-6721.
