Step inside an ambulance and ride along as the crew from Valley Medical Transport picks up a patient and delivers him to Winchester Medical Center.

Since its formation in 1988, Valley Medical Transport (VMT) has grown into a regional medical transport system for the Winchester, Va. region, geared toward meeting the needs of a wide range of patients as well as the requirements of healthcare providers such as hospitals, physicians and nursing homes. VMT serves a broad area, which includes seventeen counties in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. From stations strategically located throughout the region, Valley Medical Transport is able to quickly and efficiently responds to requests for medical transports. Requests for services are coordinated from the Central Dispatch Center located in Winchester.

By the numbers:

- VMT's vehicles travel more than 1.5 million miles a year - the equivalent of nearly three trips to the moon.

- VMT's primary service area encompasses more than 5,000 square miles.

- A VMT vehicle departs from or arrives at a healthcare facility an average of every 10 minutes, 365 days a year.

- Each year, VMT's staff of 125 completes more than 5,000 hours of training.
