Winchester Medical Center and the WMC Foundation have embarked on a campaign to build the first free-standing cancer center to be located in the Winchester community. This 46,000 square foot facility will unite all the various cancer services, equipment and physicians under one roof and will offer the finest in cancer care. Charitable gifts must be raised if the center is to be built. Why Our Community Needs a Stand-Alone Cancer Center: Fragmented Care -- Many of WMC's oncology services are spread throughout the hospital campus, and some even off-campus, causing inconvenience and hardship for patients and families needing multiple services. Lack of New Treatment & Technology -- We hope to add new services, equipment and research programs which can't be added now due to severe space limitations. Limited Space for a Growing Number of Patients -- WMC has projected a growth rate of 7% for inpatient, and a staggering 21.5% growth in outpatient cancer care. In total, the number of cancer patients will increase by an average of 5% per year for at least the next six years. Plainly stated, the current facilities will not be able to accommodate any increase in the number of cancer patients treated, in fact, we are now straining to handle the sheer number of those seeking care.
