Area health, fitness and safety professionals, educators, students and volunteers are gearing up for the 20th Annual Community Wellness Festival at Apple Blossom Mall this Saturday, February 22, from 10 am – 6 pm. The midwinter event offers exhibits, free and low-cost health screenings, demos and opportunities to meet practitioners, gather helpful information, and learn about health issues, support groups, and community resources.

For 20 years, the Festival has offered a fun and informative destination for the whole family, with topics and activities that appeal to all ages and interests.

More than 80 exhibitors will offer information, samples, screenings and conversation on a range of topics:
• preventing brain injury, bullying, distracted driving, sexual assault, falls, tooth decay, heart disease, obesity, drug interactions and medication problems;
• early detection of heart disease, breast cancer, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, kidney disease, vision and hearing problems, oral cancer, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure;
• treatment and management options for alcoholism, sleep apnea, COPD, pain, weight loss, stress;
• community resources including assisted living and alzheimer’s care, adult day care, and other home-based services;
• advocacy for prenatal health, organ donation, advance directives, CPR, volunteering, radon monitoring, and more!

Free health screenings include blood pressure, blood sugar, heart attack risk screening, COPD, hearing and vision (including glaucoma), EKG, body fat, heel densitometry for osteoporosis, and oral cancer. Valley Health Laboratory Services phlebotomists will draw blood from 10 am – 2 pm for an extensive panel of tests at discounted rates: Comprehensive Blood Panel, Lipids, CBC and TSH (thyroid) for $45, with the option of adding specialized tests (PSA, hsCRP, Vitamin D and HbgA1C) for an additional $15-$20 each. A 12-hour fast is recommended. A voucher for a later blood draw at any Valley Health Lab may be purchased until 2 pm.

Virginia Blood Services invites Festival guests to roll up their sleeves and give a pint to help others. VBS welcomes donors to its mobile unit outside Buca di Beppo from 10 am – 4 pm. Other screening vehicles parked there all day will be the Lions Club Sight and Hearing Mobile Screening Unit and Valley Health’s Health Coach, where free oral cancer screenings and osteoporosis screenings will be available.

The JCPenney Court will be alive with fitness demonstrations at the bottom of each hour, from Jazzercise, “Moving Warrior”, CrossFit and Taekwondo to Ballroom Dance. Emcee, magician and funny man John Swomley will entertain between demos:
10:30 High Intensity Workout - Onward CrossFit
11:30 Moving Warrior - Valley Health Wellness & Fitness Center (Fusion fitness combining strength training, yoga, Pilates & cardio for an invigorating whole body workout.)

Children are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal – or adopt one on the spot – for a check-up at the popular Teddy Bear Clinic staffed by Shenandoah University Nursing faculty and students. The Winchester Police Department will fingerprint children all day. This year the Festival welcomes the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum for two hands-on, interactive -- and slightly messy! -- programs for kids in the court outside the new Buca di Beppo restaurant:
10:30 Things that Bubble – ordinary home ingredients combine for an explosive program!
11:30 Fun with Science Several children from the audience will be invited to help Daryl Bell with each presentation.
