Thursday, December 20, 2012 - Winchester Medical Center’s Coronary Bypass Surgery Program Earns Top Rating
Winchester Medical Center received a 3-star rating for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), the highest score possible, according to The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has developed a comprehensive rating system for the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. Approximately 12-15% of hospitals with cardiac surgery programs receive the 3-star rating, which denotes the highest category of rankings. In the current analysis of national data covering the period from
July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012
, the cardiac surgery program at Winchester Medical Center was found to rank in this highest quality tier, thereby receiving an STS 3-star rating.
The 3-star rating from STS is based on a composite score built upon 11 individual measurements grouped into four categories:
avoidance of mortality;
avoidance of morbidity (percentage of patients who leave hospital with no serious complications such as stroke or kidney failure);
use of the internal mammary artery from the chest wall during surgery, shown to lead to better results; and,
use of four prescribed medications following surgery, shown to improve results.
“This recognition is a testament to the quality and dedication of our cardiothoracic surgeons and the entire multidisciplinary team who care for our cardiac surgery patients,” said Christopher Rumpf, MD, Valley Health’s Chief Quality and Medical Officer. “Receiving this recognition highlights our team’s commitment to providing the best cardiovascular care for our community. The three-star rating from STS is widely regarded by clinicians as the gold standard by which to evaluate cardiac surgery programs."
The STS National Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons and programs. The STS National Database and its quality assessment activities, nationally recognized quality measures, and quality improvement initiatives are built on the foundation of more than 4.5 million surgical records.
