U.S. News Best Hospital Ranking was released for 2012-2013 and Winchester Medical Center was rated the sixth best overall in Virginia. WMC was also rated the top hospital in the Shenandoah Valley.

The report looks at hospital performance in 16 specialties and taps multiple sources of data. U.S. News recently expanded its scope to look beyond major academic medical centers, naming Best Regional Hospitals. The methodology used to pick 2012-13 Best Hospitals national rankings was also used to recognize Best Regional Hospitals. Performance was based on the results of analysis of 12 specialties. WMC was highly rated in eight.

US News rated WMC as “high performing” in eight specialties:

• Diabetes & Endocrinology

• Ear, Nose & Throat

• Geriatrics

• Gastroenterology

• Nephrology

• Neurology & Neurosurgery

• Pulmonology

• Urology

“It doesn’t surprise me to see these areas acknowledged and it is easy to make the case that the list should be expanded,” said Mark Schroeder, MD, president of Winchester Medical Center’s medical staff.

“Patient health concerns don’t always fall neatly into one specialty area. Our ability to offer a multidisciplinary approach to addressing patient health issues is a strength we bring to patients coming to WMC,” Schroeder added.

Al Pilong, President of Winchester Medical Center, noted “This is a tremendous acknowledgement resulting from the outstanding leadership of our physicians and the ongoing dedication and compassion of our nurses, clinical professionals, and support staff. Every day our healthcare team provides great care to this community and we are extremely proud of this recognition.”

Nearly 4,800 hospitals nationwide were reviewed, with 732 facilities identified in the report. Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center earned top honors. The Richmond hospital is listed as best in the state based on ranking in the top 50 nationally in four areas. The hospital also was "high performing" in nine specialties. Winchester Medical Center tied with three other hospitals in the sixth spot with eight high performing areas.

In addition, Becker's Hospital Review published its list of 100 Great Community Hospitals July 16 which also included Winchester Medical Center. This listing recognizes high-performing hospitals that have fewer than 550 beds and minimal teaching programs. Becker's Hospital Review editorial team analyzed information, recognition and rankings from a variety of industry sources, including iVantage Health Analytics, Thomson Reuters, HealthGrades and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
