TREATMENT OF INFLUENZA
- For many people with mild symptoms, treatment of the flu simply means staying home, drinking plenty of non-caffeinated fluids, and using Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (ibuprofen) to relieve symptoms.
- Aspirin should not be given to children under the age of 15
- In some cases, for patients who are either sicker or at higher risk of complications, there are medicines available that can shorten the flu illness and reduce the chances of getting pneumonia. They are called Tamiflu (oseltamavir) and Relenza (zanamivir). If you think you need these medications:
- The sooner you start taking them, the better they work. It is best to start the medicine in the first 24 hours of your illness
- It is very important to complete all of the pills to prevent the flu virus from becoming resistant to the medicine
