Community Sharps Program

Many people have medical conditions such as diabetes or allergies that require self-injections or blood testing at home. A free service of Shenandoah Memorial Hospital (SMH) and Warren Memorial Hospital (WMH), the community sharps disposal program helps residents of Shenandoah County, Warren County and surrounding areas safely dispose of used medical “sharps” such as needles, syringes and lancets, reducing risk to families and waste management and landfill staff.

The hospitals distribute new sharps containers to local residents at no cost.

At SMH, containers are available 24/7 at the Emergency Department Registration Desk, or Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. from Diabetes Management. At WMH, the Pharmacy, on the hospital’s second floor, distributes containers Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Diabetes Management Clinic in the Education Department, also located on the second floor, also distributes containers Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, containers are available at the information desk in the hospital’s main lobby on the first floor.

The containers are made of rigid, puncture-resistant plastic, with a lid that can be sealed when the container is full. They are labeled to remind participants to return the full container to the hospitals for disposal and not to put it in their regular household trash.

Disposal of full sharps containers is also free of charge to local residents.

Designated drop off sites are as follows:
SMH: Reception area of Emergency Department
WMH: Receiving area at the back of the building, off 9th Street (24/7) or during the day, main laboratory on the first floor and Diabetes Management.

SMH and WMH offer the community sharps disposal program as a service to the people of our communities. As local hospitals and part of a larger healthcare system, Valley Health, we value the health and wellness of the community as a whole. Because of possible injury or exposure to disease, proper disposal of medical sharps used at home ensures increased safety for the public.
